What makes Start Right Basketball different from other programs? Our goal is to give opportunities for kids to learn the skills of basketball without the pressure of game competition. Our focus is to use basketball skill development as a means to help kids gain confidence, and “learn to learn” all while having fun. Not every kid is made out to dive straight into full games or scrimmages, and often it only takes one or two bad interactions for the kids to drop out. We aim to be a place where kids can feel safe to try, fail and try again until they get it. We incorporate fun and challenging semi-competitive games which match the skills of the group. Example first team to make 20 shots from a spot, first team to have all the players cross the finish line, as well as kids favourites such as “Bump” or "Pressure"

Do you have club or night league teams? No, Our focus is on basketball skill development. We have relationships with many of the Victoria Night League teams/organizations, and can help you in choosing the right program for your child.

Who typically joins in the program? For some kids Start Right Basketball may be all they chose to do and are happy to have a supportive environment where they can be active without the pressure of game competition. For others, it's a stepping stone to joining a school or night league team. And other kids choose to be involved with Start Right Basketball while being part of a team so they can focus on their skill development.

My child has never played basketball before. Will they be welcomed?Yes, As the name suggests, Start Right Basketball is a great place to begin. All of us need to start somewhere and what better place than in an environment where Igniting Joy is central to everything we do. Our only ask is that the kids stay encouraging and try.
-
How long do kids typically stay in the program? For some kids, they may only do one 8 week program. For others this is their main athletic extracurricular activity and are involved in multiple sessions per year. We believe that it is important for kids to be involved in various activities…we just hope Start Right is their favourite.

Can parents watch or volunteer?Yes! We encourage parental involvement. We ask that if you are in the gym that you stay present. The kids will feel more supported, and you will lower the chances of getting hit with a stray ball! (if you need to use your phone we ask you step outside)

Will my child be safe participating? It is the responsibility of the parents/guardians to ensure that the child participating is both physically and mentally able to participate. Start Right Coaches are required to have yearly vulnerable sector criminal record checks completed, as well as maintain a minimum Emergency First Aid & CPR/AED Level C certification. Start Right Basketball holds at minimum a 5 million dollar general liability insurance policy. If you have any questions or concerns, please give us a call 250-884-4654.
